The cause of the swelling?

The cause of the swelling is a substance what made contact with the dog. If the dog is allergic for this substance, the dog gets a swelling. This spot becomes into a humidity under the skin of the dog. De zwelling wordt veroorzaakt door een stofje die in contact komt met de hond, als de hond allergisch is voor dit stofje krijgt de hond een zwelling en daardoor ontstaat een vochtophoping onder de huid. It is an hypersensitivity reaction.

Types of Allergy

Food Allergy
Food allergy is an hypersensitive reacties. Moast of the time it are some parts in the food that causes the allergic reaction with the dog. It is possible that a dog is allergic for particular protein and developed a
hypersensitivity reaction. Allergen are admiddet in the blood. Allergen living in the bowels and they are seen as a threat. A dog gets a defence reaction, moastly of the time seen back in the skin. The consequence can be, vomitting, diarrhoea, itching or swollen up. In the moast cases it are more of these consequences at the time. A combination of diarrhoea, vomitting and itching.

The problems start mostly a few hours after eating food, but can alos appear a few hours for eating the food. A foodallergy is not pro definition inborn. A food allergy can shape during the dogs life. It is also possible that if a dog has eaten whole his life the same food, he gets suddenly a food allergy. If a dogs gets allergic for one element in the food, he will stay whole his life allergic for that one element.

Foodallergy is one of the least common causes of itching, diahrea and vomiting. Roughly 1 on the 100 dogs have a foodallergy. It is important to rule out that the cause of the itching is, for example fleas or a flea-allergy. There are many other causes of foodallergy. Diahrea through rotten food. If you think it is a food allergy, the veterinarian can examen your dog.

Our first sheltie had once within seconds a swollen face, her eyes were very thick and closed because of the swelling. Her cheek was 2 x so thick. Her hairs on the back of the nose and around the eyes did fell out. Not nice to see. The allergic reaction became of protein in the food.  She was already eaten not good. From other people I did get to hear that I had Spoiled her with the food and I had to give her the same food she always did get. Then she would not eat at all anymore. I did hold on to the food, and then there was a morning she did eat that food because she was very hungry and her face was swollen all over!

On this moment I went to the petstore and I have let her choosen the food. I had choosen some good foods and we let shari taste. She smelled at every food and at the end she found some food that she liked and what was good for her. She did have that food till she died.

With this story I want to say: Never doubt you're intuition, go after you're feeling. If you think the food is not good for you're sheltie, change the food!

After an vaccination in 2005, was Ylanie's head swollen a lot. She was allergic for one of the vaccinations.
Ylanie, a few hours before her yearly vaccination

Whitin two hours after the vaccination, she was all swollen in her face, everywhere you did look were bumps. Around her eyes she was bold, even her nose and bead plates were getting bold, because her skin was all swollen.

We had to get immediately a shot to stop the swelling, or otherwise it could become fatal for Ylanie. Don't wait with an swollen head. After a few hours the swelling was less, the next day her swelling was completely gone.

Ylanie was a heallthy girl, never had any healthproblems before this vaccination. After the vaccination she is always sick. Diahrea, she could not hold on to her temperature, the one minute she was cold, the other minute she had fever. The diahrea was'nt to stop anymore also not with medication. She is been operated in March 2006, she did sterrilise her, because her uteres had cystes all over, also her pancreas was full with cystes. They left an half pancreas. After that the problems did seem to be gone. But an half year later, she had the same problems again, the diahrea would not stop. She has had a long time prednisolon to stop the symptoms, because nothing other helped. Now we have changed her food from Raw Meat to Raw Meat with fresh Pancreas, and it seems to be good for her. She has not often diahrea anymore.

Flowers/plants
An other cause of an allergic reaction can be, some flowers and plants, if dogs contact them they get an allergic reaction.

Insectbites
Wasp or fly's can also give hypersensitivity reactions. If insects are catched and land in the mouth of a dog, it can causes problems if the insects bite the dog in his throat. The throat starts to swell and it can swell so thick that the dog can suffocate. If you're dog swollowed a insect please go to you're vet. And if a swelling is after a few hours not over yet, please contact you're vet too.

A sheltie with a hypersensitivity reaction from an insect. She was bitten by an insect and her cheek started to swell. It was a hugh swelling and it was growing and growing.

A swelling from an allergic reacties is most of the time gone within a few hours. The swelling on the photos did stay for 2 days long.

Right after we saw her cheek swell we called the vet and she give her an injection to stop the swelling.

After 2 days the swelling was gone

Prudence without swelling on her face.

An hypersensitivity reaction does not give many problems. You have to watch it, because dogs can suffocate. If it is an insectbite it can help to cool it. Accept with  hypersensitivity reactions after vaccination, you have to get a shot to stop the swelling, if you don't do that, you're dog can suffocate.
